Road Trip: March 20-29 Zion/Joshua Tree/Red Rocks

Packed up the van Friday afternoon and pulled out of town by 4PM for a long drive west. Climbing, hiking, and relaxation gear stowed away, we left a very spring-like Boulder to head over the mountains and see some long forgotten scenery. Time to share some of our old haunts with the girls - and with the Blum's, who caravaned along with us. Rach and I spent weeks and weeks climbing in JT and red Rocks back in our day. Both really fun spots to hang out and live off of PB&J and rice and beans. Which we did. Cause we were living hand to mouth back then. In a nutshell, as Varda so succinctly put it, the trip was: 2000+ miles driven 4 national monuments/parks/reserves visited 20+ miles hiked 24+ climbs led or toproped 1 dinner cooked, eaten, and cleaned in the daylight (meaining we were quite busy most days) 1 late night spent walking the Vegas strip (just to let the kids know what most folks like to do on their time off) Note for future I-70 road trips: the camp by West Water put-in

Jamestown and Old Stage - 30 miles

A nice, long lunch ride. 62F with just a touch of wind in the canyons. Still a fair bit of sand on the road sides to keep the descents a bit edgy. Lefthand Creek is looking awefully low for such warm temps. The snowpack most be pretty dismal.

Eldora

A nice spring ski day with excellent coverage! Got Leah and Kelly back on West Ridge (an almost for real double black) and got Leah doing jump turns on the steeps. They both have their forward lean on the steeps down pat and stay in total control on the steepest of stuff. How cool!! Rach was on alpine to save her knees and has really dialed in her technique.

Reservoir paddle - 4 miles

Spring sun with late afternoons now that daylight savings kicked in. Very nice. The water is still waaayyyy too cold to even think about rolling practice. But it is time to get the dry top and windsurfer ready for spring winds!

Niwot clockwise - 16 miles

After given blood yesterday, the old oxygen supply machine was feeling a bit, ah, hindered. Took it easy and enjoyed the views. The fields are still looking awfully dry. Where's the March snow??

Marshal Mesa clockwise - ~20 miles

This is such a cool ride to be able to do from the house! I love the mix of terrain and the views when heading west. Next time I need to cross 93 and check out the new trails over by Eldo.
