Gold Hill Loop

Another round up and over Gold Hill! Parked at the canyon mouth, rode up the snow and ice covered canyon trail to Fourmile, onward and upward to Gold Hill. Snow was all gone on this south facing ride. Looped around on Dixon Rd near Gold Hill to take in the amazing views south towards Sugarloaf. Down the big drop of Sunshine Canyon back to the car. Then to the shop to get that gosh darn shqueeker out of the rear wheel. Needed a new set of brake pads.

Mesa Trail ramble - 7 miles

Sunshine, Poorman, Fourmile - 17 miles

Yet another nice fall afternoon with temps on the 60s. Parked at the head of the canyon then road up through town to Mapleton and on up the 5.75 miles to the end of the pavement. Then back down to Poorman and down that steep dirt to Fourmile and back to the van. Stopped ate Uni bikes to drool over a Salsa Fargo. I would fit nicely on a large, thank you.

5th Flatiron East Face Left 5.4

Our annual flatiron climb. Rach and I squeezed this one in before the year is out. An incredible day for mid October with temps in the upper 70's, no wind, sunny skies. A 4 pitch stroll up this fun slab with an amazing pinnacle at the top. An exciting 75' rappel tops off the technical end of things off a CMC bolt; easy to clip and get situated before it goes free hanging.

Once around but counter clockwise this time. Sunny skies and warm temps just before sunset.

Switzerland Trail

Image
From 2011 Droid Pics and Vids A Sunday ride into the first snow of the fall. A late morning ride too. Parked up Fourmile near the turnoff to Wall Street around noon. A chilly and sloppy ride but always a good one. Puffy cold clouds scuttled across the sky most of the day but no rain or snow other than the few inches already on the ground from Saturday's storm.

RMNP Hike with Rachel

Took another Friday off. This one to spend time with Rachel hiking up in Rocky Mnt National Park. A leisurely morning, we didn't get to the Glacier Gorge parking lot until 11 or so. We set up to hike up the base of the Petite Grepon and Sky Pond. A fresh dusting of snow and night of freezing temps hindered that goal though as we get turned around at the base of the final scramble up into the upper valley. The trail there has a the creek flowing down it and it was an iced up affair that was just dicey enough to hold us back. Oh well. Still a beautiful day with temps just above freezing and brisk wind to get us into the winter mood. We looped around below Chaos Canyon and Bear Lake to turn it into a nice, 5-hour hike.

Once around clockwise.

Oct Mnt Bike Trip: Day 3 403 Trail

Image
Sunday Oct 2 403 Trail Finally got to do this trail after two previous trips here and skipping out on it. We again waited for the sun to melt off the light frost and warm up the air before chowing down some breakfast. Then packed everything up but left the van at the camp siteto ride the roads up over Schofield Pass and over towards Elkton to hit the 403. That trail then drops down and ends just a quarter mile away from the van. The map made the road riding look pretty tame but that was deceptive. It's a steep stretch up out of Paradise Basin and to the pass that looks down on the Slate River Valley. What a nice ride despite the work! Incredible, colorful slopes all around and, for a prime leaf peeping fall weekend, few people. The top of the road ride gains grand views of the Slate River drainage and the peaks over in the Raggeds Wilderness. The dimensions are Alps-like in scale. When you finally make it over to the trailhead for 403, you climb for 20 minutes or so to g...

Oct Mnt Bike Trip: Day 2 Deer Creek via Upper Upper Loop

Image
Saturday October 1 Deer Creek via Upper Upper Loop Slept like a baby in the van, slowly stirring around 7 and waited for the sun to crest the colorful ridge to the east before easing out of the sleeping bag to make breakfast. Bill is such a mellownite, pleasant and easy going to hang out with. No pretenses, no awkward silences, no need to impress or otherwise get you on edge. We enjoyed some good coffee while the sun warmed things up then headed down the road a few miles to park near Gothic and to start the loop ride around Mount Crested Butte and along Deer Creek Ridge. Yet another classic ride!!!! Incredible. We warmed up by taking the road up to to the ski town then it The Upper Loop Trail off of Hunter Glen Rd. That stretch of trail is awesome: technical, but just a touch, killer views ross the valley and town, loads of yellow Aspen, not too strenuous. From 2011_09 Crested Butte Mnt Bike Trip It traverses along the base of the moutnain all the way over to Brush Creek Rd. ...
