New toy: Salsa Vaya

From 2012_09 Misc Oh la la! Another bike! This one is a very sweet hybrid cyclocross touring beast. Chromoly steel 56cm frame, 20 speed SRAM Apex/X-9 deraillers with a wide ranging spread of 34-48 on the compact road double SRAM Apex crank paired to a mnt. 10 speed cassette 11-36, Avid BB7 cabled disk brakes, DT Swiss X470 29er rims, Clement USH 700x40 tires. Sweet set up for dirt, easy single track, and road. And braze ons for all sorts of racks and fenders. Nice! Took it for its first ride today, from work up around the reservoir, mixing up some dirt, gravel, single track, and pavement. Handles really nice on all three and still manages to kick in around 20mph with this semi knobbly tires. From 2012_09 Misc The corporate spiel: Vaya 2 The Vaya is our touring and road adventure bike, designed to handle any ‘road’ surface, from pavement to gravel. The Classico CroMoly tubeset is carefully selected to provide an excellent ride quality with a full touring load, yet i...

First climb in ages! With Evan on a Sunday morning. Had the place to ourselves on a beautiful, warm, sunny fall day. From 2012_09 Misc From 2012_09 Misc From 2012_09 Misc From 2012_09 Misc From 2012_09 Misc

Jamestown Canyon to Switzerland Trail to Upper Sunshine loop

Image
Finally strung together three trails that have been on my hit list for a long time. From 2012_09 Misc Excellent weather for this fall adventure ride and prime colors along the creek bottoms. From 2012_09 Misc I can't believe I haven't been up James Canyon before. What a hidden treasure! Must be pretty cool in the winter too. The upper meadows have grand views to the west and are lined with patches of aspens. From 2012_09 Misc Once past Gold Lake and down Ward, I headed up Sawmill Rd and caught the hidden section of the Switzerland Trail up to Goldhill Rd. From there, down Sunshine Rd to Upper Sunshine to catch the connector that traverses down to Lefthand. How cool that these non-motorized trails are hidden all over the county. And they don't much use. From 2012_09 Misc From 2012_09 Misc

Flagstaff to the 5-mile marker

Quick and hard ride before catching the end of the New Vista frisbee game against Boulder.

Navajo Peak via Airplane Gully

Image
Left the Long Lake parking lot at 7 and was on the peak by 9. Debated whether to do Apache via Eastledges but opted to do Navajo with the intent of finding a scramble over to Apache.  No such luck by myself in the wind and cold with all the loose rock and bits of snow and ice. Sigh. Back the same way? Maybe. How about following Niwot Ridge east? Went 45 min east and came cross another section too loose and steep for a solo jaunt. Ho hum. Yes, back down the same way. So be it. Still an incredible fun morning. From 2012_09 Misc From 2012_09 Misc From 2012_09 Misc

Minturn, Shrine Pass, Vail Loop

A return to Vail for Lightly. But this time without the pain. 5000ft of climbing over 40 miles. A good workout! Took a while, but saddle time is good time :-) From 2012_09 Misc

Nelson clockwise - 21 at 21

Nice and fast! A perfect 60F temp for a lunch ride.

Long way home - 24 miles

Power outage and the office is closed. Rode to work so no choice but to ride on back home - the long way :-).

Caribou Classic aka Sufferfest - 40 miles

Image
My first organized group ride in a very long time. I joined the Boulder Mountain Bike Alliance just to get a chance to ride the trails on the private Caribou Ranch lands. And it was well worth while! Colorado blue sky day, a touch of frost on the ground at registration at 7am, lots of really fun and happy people, a very challenging route with loads of climbing. 6 hours to complete the full monty, which included the slippery roots of the Little Raven Trail, the technical, round boulders of the South Saint Vrain Trail, and the body rattling rocks of the Sourdough Trail.

Switzerland Trail from Sugarloaf

Parked at Sugarloaf, headed west, north to Goldhill Rd, ease, took the short connector north of the road, down to Sunset, up to the car. Beautiful fall day with blue skies, puffy clouds, grand views, pleasant temps.
